SDG 3 Good Health and Well-being

SDG (Social Development Goal) 3 Good Health and  Well-being tackles improving general health, increasing life expectancy, reducing maternal and child mortality and fighting against leading communicable diseases. With the spread of COVID-19 across the world, people have become more aware of how illness and diseases are spread and the importance of preventing the spread of illness and disease as well as general physical health.

While coronaviruses are not new and can be found world wide, COVID-19, is a newly discovered strain so we don’t know exactly how infectious it is or who is at risk and why. Because it’s a new strain, we haven’t built up an immunity to it like we have with other flu viruses, and, at present, there isn’t a vaccine for COVID-19 but scientists are in the early stages of developing one.  The most effective way of preventing the transfer of diseases is by washing your hands, especially commonly forgotten areas such as between your fingers. Regular soap and water is all you need. You can use hand sanitizers as long as they are composed of 60% or more alcohol. The World Health Organisation has a list of common questions about the coronavirus as well as latest updates regarding the situation and developments.

The American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following five‑step approach:

  • Wet your hands and turn off the tap (to save water)
  • Lather
  • Rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds (possibly while singing Happy Birthday twice)
  • Rinse, and...
  • ...Dry

Keeping yourself healthy, limiting physical contact with others and keeping your environment clean will go a long way in helping to stop the spread of illness and diseases in general, not just COVID-19.
