What's up with the weather?

First and foremost, we are THRILLED! This means the dam levels for the 6 major dams which feed the city’s population will slowly start filling again. Current levels are sitting at 32.8%, and half way through winter, this is an ominous indication of us remaining in a continued drought. So yes, the rain does help, but rain on dry soil, can have disastrous consequences too.

The climate of South Africa is determined by South Africa's situation between 22°S and 35°S, in the Southern Hemisphere's subtropical zone, and its location between two oceans, Atlantic and Indian. It has a wider variety of climates than most other countries in sub-Saharan Africa, and it has lower average temperatures than other countries within this range of latitude, like Australia, because much of the interior (central plateau or Highveld, including Johannesburg) of South Africa is at higher elevation. Winter temperatures may reach the freezing point at high altitude, but are at their most mild in coastal regions, particularly the Eastern Cape. Cold and warm coastal currents running north-west and north-east respectively account for the difference in climate between the west and east coasts. The weather is also influenced by ENSO (El Niño–Southern Oscillation). Which is what has also added to the worsening drought in the Cape

South Africa experiences a high degree of sunshine with rainfall about half of the global average, increasing from west to east, and with semi-desert regions in the north-west. While the Western Cape has a Mediterranean climate with winter rainfall, most of the country experiences summer rain.

So: for our volunteers and visitors in South Africa, this means that, whenever you come to here, and whenever you visit any of our projects, you need to be prepared for all weather. Nights can be cool, days can be blistering hot, rain can arrive at a moment’s notice, or not at all. So, when in doubt pack a light jacket, some closed shoes and a good pair of all-weather pants. However, don’t forget your bikinis and boardshorts, as once the sun comes out, any day is a perfect day for one of our beautiful beaches!
